Weizmann Institute of Science

About the Weizmann Institute of Science

Founded in 1934 in Rehovot, Israel, the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) is one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary basic research institutions in the natural and exact sciences.

With 250 experimental and theoretical research groups across five faculties — Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics — WIS has a long history of inquiry and discovery grounded in its mission to advance science for the benefit of humanity. The insights that emerge from its laboratories help provide a fundamental understanding of the human body and the universe, and translate into advances in medicine, technology, and the environment.

The institute is home to around 3,800 scientists, postdoctoral researchers, master’s and PhD students, and scientific, technical, and administrative staff. As of 2019, six Nobel Prize and three Turing Award winners have been associated with the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Partnership with Pioneer Science

In 2022, Pioneer Science established a partnership with the Weizmann Institute to create the Weizmann-IDOR Pioneer Science Fellowship, which aims to train young Brazilian scientists abroad and support their academic trajectory upon returning to Brazil. The program has supported postdoctoral researchers interested in developing research in the life and health sciences, and in their interfaces with mathematics, computer science, physics, and chemistry.

Researcher Paulo Cezar Santos based his work on the neuromechanics of gait in patients with Parkinson’s disease and returned to Brazil to continue his research in the country. Felipe Ptak remains in Israel, focusing on the application and development of biopolymers for health-related uses, in collaboration with the plastic surgery team at Kaplan Medical Center.
