What is maverick science?

Names like Galileo, da Vinci, Curie, and Tesla are almost synonymous with what it means to be a maverick scientist: they have challenged dogma, launched new science fields, and explored uncharted territory, sometimes putting themselves in danger while doing so. Today’s maverick scientists dare to question established science and delve into technological or theoretical challenges that appear not worthy of mainstream attention or impossible to address.
